The BioSigns Telemonitoring System is an all-encompassing platform for comprehensive and continuous ECG and vital signs monitoring. Telemonitoring technology is complex and highly advanced—but it’s designed to work so smoothly that clinicians barely notice it. That means they can focus their attention where it belongs, on the patient.
How does it work? The body-worn BioSigns device transmits all data in near real time to a central server. Use desktop or tablet PCs and smartphone apps for Android and iOS for primary monitoring and notification. The BioSigns Telemonitoring System features wireless transmission of patient data via the existing hospital infrastructure (i.e. WiFi 802.11 network), or via its internal 3G. It supports multiple options for viewing and alarming, both on the device itself and remotely as well as connecting to hospital IT systems.

Avoiding government penalties is a crucial goal for hospital executives and administrators. The new penalties are based on two of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) key success indicators—a reduction in hospital readmissions and an increase in patient satisfaction rates. hospital executives are also looking for solutions to address other pain points, such as low financial returns, inconsistent patient care and operational inefficiencies.
Once a patient leaves the hospital, staying out of the hospital is an important sign that their conditions are well-managed and that whatever problem brought them to the hospital has been resolved. According to a recent report from the Dartmouth Atlas Project—which uses Medicare data to provide information and analysis about national healthcare markets and hospitals—roughly one in six Medicare patients were back in the hospital within a month after being discharged for a medical condition. CMS has estimated the cost of these avoidable readmissions at more than $17 billion a year; the penalties going into effect in fiscal year 2016 are part of a large initiative to reduce those costs.
Why are patients readmitted? It could be that the medical team failed to diagnose all the patient’s health problems, did not provide treatment that would resolve them in the long term, or failed to give the patient instructions on how to care for themselves after leaving. "The report highlights widespread and systematic failures in coordinating care for patients after they leave the hospital," said David C. Goodman, MD, lead author and co-principal investigator for the Dartmouth Atlas Project, and director of the Center for Health Policy Research at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. Readmissions suggest imperfect care, and cause real harm. "Irrespective of the cause, unnecessary hospital readmissions lead to more tests and treatments, more time away from home and family, and higher healthcare costs."
